      <image:title>Gibbs Creek - Gibbs Creek Forest Before</image:title>
<image:caption>Before restoration: The forest was made up of a high number of small Douglas fir trees, in a pattern of thickets and openings. Very few old growth trees remain after the logging in the mid-1900s, and some of these old growth trees have since blown over.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gibbs Creek - Gibbs Creek Forest After</image:title>
<image:caption>After Restoration: We thinned the forest out by removing the small, ingrown trees. The oldest, healthiest trees were left standing, and the small and unhealthy trees were removed. Trees were removed around xusum (Shepherdia canadensis) and rocky mountain juniper to encourage the growth of these shrubs. The final forest density is between 200 and 400 trees per hectare.</image:caption>

<image:caption>About two-thirds of the trees were removed. The largest, healthiest trees were retained, and they were left in a pattern of clumps and openings that followed the pattern of the stumps in the stand. Standing dead trees, such as the one in the centre of this photograph, were left standing to retain wildlife habitat.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Plantation - Before restoration</image:title>
<image:caption>Before restoration, the Plantation was a thick young forest of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. There were about 1450 stems per hectare, and the xusum was slowly getting overtaken by the trees. This photo was taken in the fall of 2008.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Plantation - After restoration</image:title>
<image:caption>After restoration, the forest was thinned to approximately 400 stems per hectare. The forest was opened up around the xusum to give them more sunlight, water, and nutrients. The slash was lopped and scattered to get it as close to the ground as possible. This photo was taken in the summer of 2009.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Plantation - Two years after</image:title>
<image:caption>This photo was taken in fall 2011, almost two years after the restoration work was completed. The slash has flattened down significantly, and the trees have been pruned.</image:caption>
